DAY 14

9/11

The morning started out as usual, just another day working the Frame Desk at the Ebinport Remote. I was doing my job of processing orders, putting them into the switch and making changes that people had ordered. Once I finished with the switch work I moved over to the frame to begin running jumpers that would connect customers phone lines. I remember being up on the ladder running a jumper when John Helms (my supervisor) said something is happening and turned on the small TV we had in the office. The internet, still being pretty new was not our immediate source for news. Several Techs were still in the office that morning and we were all glued to the TV and sat in disbelief watching the 1st tower with smoke coming out of it and then watched in horror as the 2nd plane struck the 2nd tower. We sat and watched as people jumped from the towers and stared in disbelief as the towers crumbled and fell…it just didn’t seem real, we were all in shock wondering what was happening and was it happening anywhere else.

John Helms was the first one I ever heard say that he believed the attack was the responsibility of Osama Bin Laden, I don’t think I had ever even heard that name before. I remember wanting to check on all my loved ones to make sure everyone was safe and that they knew the US was under attack. It was very hard to continue working that day, but we did because our customers depended on us that day more than ever to keep the lines of communication open.
